Dear valued patron,
Hello. We hope that all of you are healthy and surviving these unprecedented times as well as possible. The situation that we all face during this pandemic has been extremely difficult to navigate both individually and collectively. The constantly evolving nature of the virus and the information that changes with every update require making decisions as to when the appropriate time is to attempt a reopening.
That dilemma faces all businesses and Candlelight is no exception. Our goal from the outset has been to try and open the theater at the first opportunity where all information regarding the safety of staff and patrons indicated it was reasonably safe to do so. Many of our loyal patrons as well as everyone at the theater have been looking forward to that day, and the staff has been working diligently to achieve it. With that goal in mind we have proceeded on a show-by-show basis trying to balance safety with accommodating all those who need the escape and camaraderie that Candlelight offers. As new information has been disseminated by the State of Delaware and as we saw that spikes were occurring wherever people were gathering in large numbers, we have continuously adjusted our expectations.
It is with that in mind that we want you to know that the decision has been made to cancel the remaining productions in our 2020 season. We have no doubt you are feeling a building sense of frustration over the starts and stops associated with reopening. And we sincerely apologize. In balancing the enormous financial impact to the theater with the safety and well-being of the staff and all our patrons, we chose safety first. As a result of our unwillingness to compromise that safety, the theater will officially close as of August 2 and all staff except for a presence in the box office will be furloughed. It is not possible to continue operations currently due to the lack of available funds.
We are busy working on plans for our 2021 season; in the meantime, to celebrate Candlelight and the arts, we have plans to host “special events” outdoors. Our first event is Friday, August 7 when we will feature “Joe Trainor and Brendan Sheehan of Beatlefest present: Acoustic Beatles.” On Saturday, August 22, the cover band Lyric Drive will perform. We will let you know more information soon about these events and any others, as well as our plans for the 2021 season.
We will be in touch soon about the remaining shows. We hope you will consider donating your unused subscription or single show tickets back to the theater. You can also call the box office and they will gladly convert your ticket to a donation and send you a tax acknowledgement letter.
The Board and staff would like to express how thankful we are for all the support and loyalty you have shown to Candlelight over the years and look forward to the 2021 season and the day we are able to welcome you back to “the barn.”
The Artistic Director, The Board, and The Staff of The Candlelight Theatre
