Fiddler On The Roof

The Candlelight Theatre’s production of Fiddler on the Roof showed me something about Anatevka that I had never seen before—hope.

The high energy and split second timing of this brilliant musical brought the exuberance and life stories to full flower.

The Candlelight Theatre in Arden, Delaware, is in an old barn with a quite small stage compared to most theatres. In spite of these problems they consistently produce outstanding theatre. Its current production of “Fiddler On the Roof” is professional in spite of these drawbacks. They start with a cast that has almost half of the members professional actors who have toured with this show. The high energy and split second timing of this brilliant musical brought the exuberance and life stories to full flower. If you have never seen this musical, this would be a good place to enjoy it. This is the story of a Jewish family in Tsarist Russia that is forced to leave their homes where they have been for generations. Coupled by some songs that have become beloved by the public it is an exciting evening of theatre.

The cast has some outstanding performers, Beginning with David T. Wills as the milkman Teyve, Mike Cartledge as the explosive butcher Lasar Wolfe, two strong opinionated men with differing opinions. Marissa Barnathan (Hodel), Victoria Healy (Tseitel) and Brigid Rose (Chava) as the three older daughters were a triple threat as each was outstanding musically and in acting. There were other flawless performances. All I can say is don’t miss this Stella production. The show runs through Nov. 2. For tickets call 302-475-2313.
